But what is Bushin?

Bushin is a mixed martial art, blending together elements of Boxing, Kick boxing, Muay thai, Shorinji kempo, JKD, Krav maga, BJJ, Defence lab and more. It is an effective, tried and tested system to defend against aggressive assailants, multiple opponents & street thugs from all positions.

Where most martial arts and self defence classes only teach you how to handle a one on one situation on your feet, Bushin goes much further to train you to protect yourself and your loved ones against numerous scenarios such as multiple attackers, being attacked whilst seated on a tube or bus stop, being attacked or grabbed from behind, being attacked by an armed attacker, recovering from being knocked to the ground and more.

Its a truly holistic martial art for today’s world.

TESTIMONIALS:

Lucia Frascerra - White belt

“I joined Bushin after a friend of mine was attacked in London and I thought it was a good idea to learn how to defend myself in case something like that happened to me as well. I didn't have any previous experience of self defense or fighting and I thought that this would hold me back, but it was definitely not the case: people in Bushin are so welcoming and nice to each other, always ready to help - it's truly a place for every level, from beginner to black belt. It's much more than a self defense class, it's real street fighting and a super good workout as well , but most importantly, it's great fun! I highly recommend it.”

Matthew Jenkins - Green belt

“Bushin is a practical mixed martial art that helps you to learn essential skills needed to defend yourself in today’s London. Whether it be fighting multiple opponents and learning how to defend against a knife. Not only does it give you the skills to defend yourself it’s also a great workout with a very nice mix of fellow students of mixed abilities. I would highly recommend it.”

Jimmy Nsubuga - Green belt

”I first joined Bushin four years ago after I witnessed a street fight because I wanted to learn how to defend myself if I ever got into a similar situation. I considered other martial arts classes but after attending a taster session I felt Bushin was the right one.

It taught a number of disciplines including boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai in an environment that was comfortable to learn in.

You can learn at your own pace and everything that is taught is practical and can be applied to a real life situation.”

Deborah King - White belt

“A nice class, fun people to work out with, a good mix of martial arts and an enthusiastic Sensei. The location is pretty easy to get to it’s a 7 minute walk from Pimlico tube station.”

Debasish Lala - Blue belt

“Most martial arts clubs either teach you a traditional style by an instructor that has not actually tested it themselves as they have not had to use it in a real fight or you have MMA/Muay Thai/Boxing gyms which train you for competition. Bushin uses a range of fighting techniques, that have been tested, and many skills used in MMA and has adapted it for real life situations instead of being focused on competition fighting just for sport. People of a range of experience will be able to learn from complete beginners to trainees with experience. A lot of the old fashioned myths that existed in traditional martial arts have been debunked nowadays mainly due to MMA and Bushin is all about only doing what is effective in a fight.”

Tamer El Minshawy - Green belt

“I’d had already been training at Bushin for about 2 years the first time I was actually involved in an attempted mugging. My friend and I were coming out of a restaurant quite late on a Friday evening walking back to my car. We took a shortcut down an alleyway and these two youths just appeared out of nowhere and started threatening us, demanding my car keys, phones and money.

My friend was also a martial artist training at a kickboxing club and he immediately started arguing and then fighting with one of the youths, while the other came running at me. I knocked him to the floor without any real effort but there must have been a big group of them waiting just at the other side of the alley, because as soon as he started shouting another 8 guys came running towards us, and these had belts in their hands which they started to attack us with.

Thankfully because of my training with Bushin I knew how to move, cover block and line up my attackers to avoid being hit in the face or eyes with the buckles and ensure that only one or two of them could attack me at once and I wasn’t surrounded despite the numbers. I was scared but my muscle memory took over and I just did what I had been trained to do and managed to minimise the damage I took to just bruises and cuts on my arms, legs and shoulders.

Unfortunately my friend wasn’t so lucky and by the time we managed to fight our way free of the alley and onto the main road, where a group of guys came to our aid in scaring the muggers off, he was bleeding heavily from the face and head and had to go to the hospital to get stitches in his ear, forehead and just above his eye.

The whole experience was just really awful and it really opened my eyes to how very different fighting in a ring one on one and this kind of unprovoked gang attack is. I’m really grateful to the club for giving me the skills to come out of this situation safe and comparatively unharmed! I think everyone should learn this stuff as it really saved me.”

Will I get injured? Is it safe?

At Bushin we maintain a very safe training environment for all our students. We have a mix of male and female students and we always take into account, size, weight, individual skill levels, pre-existing injuries and medical conditions.

Any safety gear required for training activities is provided.

Injuries are extremely rare and sparring is done in a very controlled manner. Classes are supervised by Sensei Stephen who has first aid training, is DBS checked and is a fully licenced coach and instructor under the AMA (the largest martial arts licencing body in the UK).

More about Our Philosophy

Safety First

Whilst being a martial arts class we focus predominantly on self defence when you first start with us. Our philosophy is that we want to equip you with the knowledge and tools to defend yourself from the first day you walk through our door. Once you have mastered the basics of striking safely, maintaining an effective guard and staying safe in a violent encounter, only then do we expand out into our full fighting style which encompasses advanced striking concepts, counter punching, takedowns, grappling, multiple attackers, locks, restraints, ground fighting and weapons.

Self Defence / Street Defence?

When we talk about self defence or street defence we are not talking about being a passive participant in a fight or attack until the “bad guy” assaults you. One of our most important strategies is the pre-emptive strike / combination which is designed to end a violent encounter BEFORE your opponent has the opportunity to throw damaging punches and strikes at you.

Most people believe you have to wait until someone has already grabbed or hit you before you can start to defend yourself. In reality this is often far too late! In a large percentage of fights and attacks the first punch is enough to knock you out or seriously injure you in a way which will seriously reduce your ability to defend yourself after this point, leaving you at their mercy or lack thereof.

The truth is you have a legal right to use reasonable force to defend yourself, if you have a reasonable belief that someone intends to harm you, even if they have not yet initiated physical violence and are still in the intimidation phase. We can teach you how to use proactive defence and pre-emptive striking to stop a violent assailant in their tracks enabling you to exit the situation unharmed.

We describe what we do as street defence as our training takes into account the reality of being in a fight outside of a ring without gloves, a safe canvas floor, referees and rules or the safety of knowing that you only have to deal with one opponent!

Martial Arts

Bushin is a holistic mixed martial art not just a self defence class.

We have taken a huge array of traditional strikes, throws, locks and techniques and adapted them into a coherent fighting style to be more relevant and effective in a street setting or real life scenario. You can learn more about us in our about section, just click the link below!
